「No.」

Before MRi

People often ask me how MRi began. The truth is, I never planned to become a company president.

In the late 1990s, after Japan's economic bubble burst, I lost my lucrative TV production job and suddenly found myself struggling just to make ends meet. I still remember standing in Shibuya, counting the coins in my purse to see if I had enough train fare to get to my kyudo dojo in Denenchofu. Those were humbling days.

Then, completely out of the blue, a friend called and asked if I would teach English to a doctor.

My immediate answer was, "No."

From my experience, doctors were simply too busy to keep regular lesson schedules. Even though I didn't have a full-time job, I was supporting myself with translation work—including translating ten books for Yoh Shomei—and I wasn't interested in taking on unreliable work.

But my friend wouldn't give up.

Finally, she said, "He's a plastic surgeon."

That caught my attention.

I remember thinking, You never know when you might need a plastic surgeon! So I accepted.

That one decision changed my life.

The doctor was Dr. Tomoyuki Matsukura. Ironically, instead of my teaching him English, he taught me. While conversation in English was difficult for him, he could explain the entire structure of the skin in perfect English. I became fascinated by aesthetic medicine and spent countless hours learning from him.

At that time, he was using the Obagi Nu-Derm System and advanced chemical peels to dramatically improve damaged skin. Looking at his business, I asked him a simple question:

"What if I could negotiate directly with the manufacturer so you wouldn't have to pay Import markups?"

I didn't ask for a salary. I only requested a computer, travel expenses, and reimbursement for the expensive long-distance phone calls that international business required in those days—before email and the internet became part of everyday life.

He agreed.

That simple agreement became my introduction to the international medical business.

I traveled to the United States to meet Dr. Zein Obagi and his company. Although the negotiations ultimately fell through because they were already in discussions with Rohto Pharmaceutical, I learned something even more valuable: I discovered that I loved introducing innovative medical products to Japan.

During one of those trips, I saw an infomercial for Proactiv and arranged for Dr. Matsukura to import it directly for his dermatology practice. We continued working with Guthy-Renker for several years until they established their own Japanese operations.

Around that same time, after experiencing an intensive skin treatment by Dr. Obagi himself, I began searching for products that could maintain those remarkable results. That search eventually led me to a small startup in Dallas called SkinCeuticals.

The company was tiny, but the science was extraordinary.

At that point, Dr. Matsukura and I established a company called Neo Medic, and for the first time in years, I received a monthly salary—¥100,000.

Through Neo Medic, and working together with Dr. Matsukura and JEMEC, one of Japan's leading laser distributors, we introduced SkinCeuticals to more than 200 Japanese physicians. It was an exciting time. Watching groundbreaking science gain acceptance in Japan convinced me that innovation could truly change lives.

Eventually, SkinCeuticals was acquired by L'Oréal, and our international distributorship ended overnight. It was disappointing, but by then something even more important had happened.

My interests had begun to change.

I watched patients look ten years younger after aesthetic treatments, yet many still felt old.

I started asking myself:

What good is looking ten years younger if you don't feel ten years younger?

That question changed everything.

At a plastic surgery conference, I attended an optional early morning lecture on Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy. I asked Dr. Matsukura if I could attend, and he agreed.

That single seminar sparked a journey that has now lasted more than twenty-five years.

While I continued researching hormone therapy, Dr. Matsukura unexpectedly approached me with another idea.

He wanted me to establish a completely separate company where I would become president.

I couldn't believe it.

In fact, I initially refused.

I had never dreamed of owning a company.

But he insisted.

That decision would change the course of my life forever.

I had never imagined becoming a company president, and I certainly never imagined where that small company with just ¥3 million in capital would lead.

Next week, I'll share how MRi was born—and why many people believed it wouldn't survive more than three years.
