And that is how MRi was founded.
I owe it all to Dr. Matsukura. I never intended to become a company president or run my own business. My original vision for MRi (Medical Research International) was simply to consult with physicians on the emerging field of anti-aging medicine, with Natural Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy as my lead project.
In June 2003, MRi was established.
What I didn't know at the time was that in July 2002, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) had abruptly terminated its Hormone Replacement Therapy study. By the time I launched MRi, gynecologists internal medicine and aesthetic physicians had already heard the alarming headlines and many refused even to meet with me.
Few had actually read the study itself. The message that spread around the world was simply, "Hormones cause cancer." The study had found increased risks associated with synthetic estrogen and progestin; for breast cancer, heart attacks, and blood clots. Yet almost no one understood the distinction between synthetic hormones and bio-identical hormones—hormones that have the exact same molecular structure as those naturally produced by our bodies.
I struggled to find anyone willing to listen.
But once again, Dr. Matsukura stood beside me. He traveled with me to the United States to study under Dr. Neal Rouzier and understood the science and potential of this therapy. Through his influence and support, we slowly began building interest in Natural Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy in Japan.
At the same time, another unexpected opportunity appeared.
I had already signed a contract with Jane Iredale while I was at Neo Medic. When I realized how challenging it would be to establish the hormone program, I asked the president of Neo Medic if we could move jane iredale under the umbrella of MRi. He agreed. As a man, he simply didn't have the passion to introduce an unknown makeup brand into a Japanese market dominated by major domestic cosmetic companies, nor did he have any interest in managing twenty lipstick shades for a margin of less than ¥500 per item.
Meanwhile, Dr. Matsukura was being asked by many patients what makeup products were best for sensitive skin and post-procedure care. I decided that if we were going to make the same claims that jane iredale made in the United States—that it was suitable after laser treatments, ideal for sensitive skin, could cover acne without interfering with acne treatment, and naturally conceal bruising from Botox and fillers—then we needed to prove it ourselves.
So I made the decision to sell only to doctors.
Within three years, we were in over 300 clinics.
Then one day, Yoshikawa Chiaki-san approached me and asked if she could introduce jane iredale to Isetan. My contract allowed sales only through professional channels and pharmacies, but I created a business plan and presented it to Jane Iredale. She approved it, and we became the first company in the world to sell jane iredale in a department store, launching at what later became the Beauty Apothecary at Isetan.
Those first years were a nightmare.
A tiny mark on the packaging, the slightest discoloration, or the smallest imperfection could result in products being returned. Even after our own warehouse inspections, every week we would receive boxes of products rejected for what were often only superficial reasons.
Yet those difficult years taught us discipline and pushed the brand to become "retail-proof." Looking back, I realize that what we endured became one of our greatest strengths.
I was later told that many of the staff that surrounded us believed MRi would not survive beyond three years.
Twenty-three years later, we are still here.
After stabilizing the importation of jane iredale, I continued searching for other exceptional products and concepts that could improve health and beauty without competing with one another. That philosophy eventually led us to brands such as RevitaLash and to the development of our own products and educational programs.
Today, we continue to face new challenges, the most recent being the dramatic depreciation of the Japanese yen. For a small independent importer, it has been one of our greatest tests.
But one thing has never changed.
MRi was never created simply to sell products. It was created to introduce ideas, therapies, and innovations that I truly believed could make a difference in people's lives. Every obstacle, every rejection, and every difficult year has only strengthened that mission.
When I look back on these past twenty-three years, I realize that the people who thought MRi would last only three years were right about one thing—it should have been impossible.
And yet, here we are.
Still learning. Still growing. Still believing.
And as long as there are exceptional products, groundbreaking science, and new ways to help people remain forever young and beautiful, the story of MRi is far from over.
