故郷、ポートランド再発見 ― 私にとって特別な場所

来月、オレゴン州ポートランドへ行く予定です。
私はポートランドで育ちました。この街は長い年月の中で大きく変わったので、今では帰る度まるで旅行者のような気持ちになります。
新しいレストランや個性的な街並み、知る人ぞ知るスポットなどを発見する度に「やっぱりポートランドは私の故郷だな」と感じるのです。
夏にアメリカを旅行される読者の方も多いので、今回は私のおすすめの場所をいくつかご紹介したいと思います。長年通っている場所もあれば、比較的新しく見つけた場所もあります。
初めて訪れる方にも、久しぶりに訪れる方にも、ポートランドならではの魅力や創造性、美しさを感じていただけたら嬉しいです。

私が暮らすポートランド北東地区周辺

私の好きなレストランのひとつが、大通りNE Broadwayにある「Heavenly Creatures」です。落ち着いた雰囲気の中で、創造性あふれる小皿料理を楽しめる素敵なお店です。ワインの品揃えにも定評がありますが、私はワインよりもシャンパン派。グラスでいただけるシャンパンの種類も豊富で、毎回新しい出会いがあります。
お料理も大好きで、特にハラペーニョを添えたポテトチップスと焼きカマンベールは格別です。肩肘張らずにゆっくり過ごせる、まさに地元の名店です。

自宅から少し歩くと、ポートランドで長年愛されているベーカリー「Helen Bernhard Bakery」があります。
こちらでぜひ試していただきたいのがマリオンベリーパイ。マリオンベリーはブラックベリーの一種でオレゴン州を代表する果実。地元の人々に愛されている理由がすぐにわかると思います。

「St. Simon Coffee Co.」も長年親しまれているコーヒーショップです。最近はコーヒーの代わりに抹茶を楽しむようになったので以前ほど通わなくなりましたが、今でも素敵な憩いの場です。

近くには個性的なクロワッサンで人気の「Twisted Croissants & Patisserie」もありますし、さらにBroadwayを進むと「Coco Donuts」があります。私のおすすめはアップルフリッター。朝6時から営業しているので、空港へ向かう途中に立ち寄れます。

スーパーマーケット巡り

普段の買い物には「New Seasons Market」をよく利用していました。Whole Foodsよりも親しみやすい雰囲気があり、気軽に利用できるのが魅力です。
でも私が本当に一番好きなのはWest Burnsideにある「Zupan's Market」です。
私は食料品店を営む家庭で育ったので、スーパーマーケットにはこだわりがあるのですが、Zupan'sはポートランドで最高の食料品店だと思っています。
美しい青果や花々、デリ、厳選された食材が並び、いつも質の高さに感心します。自宅に飾る花も、ほとんどここで購入しています。

ダウンタウンのお気に入り

今の家を購入する前は、ダウンタウンの「The Nines Hotel」によく滞在していました。
最上階のレストラン「Departure」では、街を一望しながら独創的なアジア料理を楽しめます。また、ホテル内の「Urban Farmer」も素晴らしいレストランで、高いレベルのアメリカ料理の定番を味わうことができます。

可能であればバレーパーキングではなくセルフパーキングがおすすめです。バレーは料金が高めで、車が出てくるまで時間がかかることもあります。
「Heathman Hotel」もかつて私のお気に入りでした。オーナーやレストランは何度か変わっていますが、劇場や文化施設へのアクセスは今でも抜群です。

日本食

ポートランドで私が最も好きな伝統的な日本食レストランは、「Murata Restaurant」です。Keller Auditorium（舞台芸術センター）やポートランド州立大学の近くにあり、私にとってポートランドで最も本格的な日本食レストランのひとつです。

最近、弟と一緒にNE Alberta Streetにある「Bamboo Sushi」を見つけました。Jefferson High Schoolの近くにあるお店です。
私は東京では食べられないような、アメリカならではの個性的なお寿司が好きなので、このお店はとても気に入っています。
Alberta Arts Districtは、壁画やショップ、レストランが並ぶ、ポートランドでも特に色彩豊かでクリエイティブなエリアです。Bamboo Sushiは市内に複数店舗ありますが、この店舗は特に温かく居心地の良い雰囲気です。

食後には、よく「Kate's Ice Cream」へ立ち寄ります。乳製品を使わないアイスクリームのお店で、ココナッツミルクで作られたマリオンベリーコブラー味は本当におすすめです。

特別な日のレストラン

特別な日のディナーにふさわしいレストランで今一番気に入っているのは、ポートランドのリッツ・カールトンにある「Bellpine」です。
20階に位置し眺望、サービス、雰囲気、すべてが素晴らしく、特別な時間を過ごすことができます。

また、Pearl Districtにあるペルー料理レストラン「Andina」も好きなレストランの一つ。ポートランドを代表する人気店でお料理は素晴らしいのですが、駐車場探しに少し苦労することがあります。

SE Hawthorneにある「Ok Omens」もおすすめです。ワインに力を入れているレストランとして知られていますが、ワイン好きでなくても十分楽しめます。料理の質が高く、活気がありながらも居心地の良いことが魅力です。

ポートランド日本庭園

私がこの街で最も愛している場所の一つ。
私の母はこの庭園の設立メンバーの一人でした。
長年その存在を身近に感じていましたが、本当に深く魅了されるようになったのは、スティーブン・ブルーム氏が運営を率いるようになってからです。
彼のリーダーシップのもと、この庭園は世界でも高く評価される日本庭園へと発展しました。日本国内の名庭園にも引けを取らない美しさを持ちながら、独自の国際的な魅力も備えています。
私はこの庭園を歩くたびに心が穏やかになります。

日帰り旅行

キャノンビーチ
私が昔から愛しているオレゴンの観光地の一つです。
象徴的なヘイスタックロック、美しい海岸線、そしてどこか懐かしい海辺の町の雰囲気が魅力です。

長年、「Stephanie Inn」というホテルによく宿泊していました。素晴らしいサービスと海の絶景で知られるホテルです。ここ数年は訪れていませんが、たくさんの素敵な思い出があります。

フッドリバー

大好きなこの町では、かつて弟がビデオレンタル店を経営していたこともあり、帰省するたびによく訪れていました。
コロンビア川渓谷沿いに位置し、美しい自然やアウトドアアクティビティ、そして優れたレストランで知られています。

夏になると、ウィンドサーフィンやカイトボードを楽しむ人々で川が賑わいます。
私の特別な思い出の一つは、「Stonehedge Gardens」で名物のフレーミング・ブレッドプディングをいただいたことです。現在は主にプライベートイベント向けの営業になっていますが、魅力的なレストランが数多くあります。

また、コロンビア川渓谷を見下ろす「Columbia Gorge Hotel」もぜひ訪れていただきたい場所です。素晴らしい景色とともに、オレゴンの歴史を感じることができます。

ここでご紹介したのは、私が長年愛してきた場所のほんの一部に過ぎません。
けれども、この街を訪れる皆さまが、ご自身だけの特別なポートランドを見つけるきっかけになれば嬉しく思います。
ポートランドという街は、一度にすべてを見せてくれる場所ではありません。
ゆっくり歩きながら、自分自身で発見していくことにこそ、この街の魅力があるように思います。

さらに、ポートランドの好きなところ

ダウンタウンや私が暮らすNEポートランドは徒歩でも十分楽しめますが、周辺エリアまで足を延ばすならレンタカーがおすすめです。
ポートランドはコーヒー文化でも有名で、市内には個性豊かなコーヒーショップが数多くあります。「Stumptown Coffee Roasters」はその代表的な存在です。

また、日本庭園の近くにはポートランドローズガーデンがあり、夏には数千本ものバラと街並みを一望できる絶景を楽しめます。

自然がとても身近にあります。ハイキングや釣り、美しい川や滝など、少し足を延ばすだけで豊かな自然に触れることができます。
そして、オレゴン州には消費税がありません。ショッピング好きには嬉しいポイントかもしれませんね。
また、ポートランドには長い歴史を持つ日系アメリカ人コミュニティがあり、日本の文化や食、芸術、伝統への理解が深く根付いています。そのため、日本から訪れる方々もきっと親しみを感じられると思います。

来月ポートランドに帰った際、ぜひ訪れたいと思っている特別な場所があります。ダウンタウンのウォーターフロントにある噴水近くにある、札幌まるやまライオンズクラブによって設置された記念碑です。父と父の仲間を記念したもので、父の名前が刻まれています。長年その存在は知っていましたが、実際に訪れるのは今回が初めてになります。ポートランドと札幌は姉妹都市であり、ポートランド・ベントンライオンズクラブと札幌まるやまライオンズクラブは姉妹クラブです。２つを結んだ友情や奉仕の精神に思いを馳せながら、この場所を訪れることをとても楽しみにしています。
訪問後には、写真や詳しいお話も皆さまと共有できればと思っています。

Rediscovering Portland: My Favorite Places in My Hometown

I'm planning a trip to Portland, Oregon next month. Although I grew up there, the city has changed so much over the years that I often feel like a visitor myself. Each time I return, I discover a new restaurant, neighborhood, or hidden gem that reminds me why Portland will always feel like home.

Many of my readers enjoy traveling to the United States during the summer, so I thought I would share a few of my favorite places. Some are longtime favorites, while others are more recent discoveries. Whether you're visiting Portland for the first time or returning after many years, I hope these recommendations help you experience some of the charm, creativity, and beauty that make Portland such a special city.

In the Neighborhood I live which is NE Portland

One of my favorite local restaurants is Heavenly Creatures on NE Broadway.  It has an intimate atmosphere, creative small plates, and an excellent wine program. I don't drink wine myself, but I do love champagne and they always have one I have never tried before by the glass.  I love their food—especially the potato chips with jalapeño with baked Camembert. It's a wonderful neighborhood spot for a relaxed evening.

Just down the street from my place is one of Portland's beloved bakeries, Helen Bernhard Bakery. I especially recommend their Marionberry Pie. Marionberries are an Oregon specialty, and if you're new to the area, you'll soon discover why locals love them so much.

St. Simon Coffee Co. has long been a neighborhood favorite. I don't visit as often these days since I've traded coffee for matcha, but it's still a wonderful gathering place.

Nearby you'll also find a great Twisted Croissants & Patisserie for unitque flavors and further down Broadway is Coco Donuts, their Apple Fritter is my personal favorite and they open at 6 am so sometimes if  I’m lucky and can stop by on the way to the airport.

Grocery Shopping

For everyday shopping, I often went to New Seasons Market, which I find a little more approachable than Whole Foods.

My true favorite, however, is Zupan's Market on West Burnside where you will find what I think is Portland's finest grocery store. I grew up in a grocery store family, so I'm very particular about markets. Zupan's consistently has beautiful produce, flowers, prepared foods, and specialty items. It's where I always by flowers for my home.

Downtown Favorites

Before buying this house, I often stayed at the Nines Hotel downtown. Their rooftop restaurant, Departure, serves creative Asian-inspired cuisine with spectacular city views. The hotel's main restaurant Urban Farmer with a standard American menu is also excellent.

One tip: if possible, self-park rather than use valet service. It can be expensive and sometimes takes quite a while to retrieve your car.

The Heathman Hotel was once my favorite downtown destination. It has changed ownership and restaurants several times over the years, so I'm not as familiar with it today, but it's still ideally located near Portland's theaters and cultural venues.

Japanese Food

My favorite traditional Japanese restaurant in Portland is Murata Restaurant, located near the Keller Auditorium and Portland State University area. I consider it one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in the city.

More recently, my brother and I discovered Bamboo Sushi on NE Alberta Street, near Jefferson High School. I always like Sushi that is unique to American that I can’t get in Tokyo. The Alberta Arts District is one of Portland's most colorful and creative neighborhoods, filled with murals, shops, and restaurants. There are several Bamboo Sushi locations around Portland, and I've enjoyed them all, but this one feels especially welcoming.

After dinner, we often walk over to Kate's (non-dairy) Ice Cream for dessert. Their Marionberry Cobbler ice cream made with coconut milk is absolutely delicious.

Special Occasion Dining

For a special evening out, my current favorite may be the restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Portland. Bellpine on the 20th floor.  The service, atmosphere, and views are exceptional.

I also continue to enjoy Andina in the Pearl District, one of Portland's best-known Peruvian restaurants. The food is wonderful, though parking can sometimes be a challenge.

Ok Omens on SE Hawthorne is another favorite. It's a wine-focused restaurant known for its devotion to quality ingredients and excellent Rieslings. Even if you're not a wine enthusiast, the food is outstanding and the atmosphere lively and welcoming.

The Japanese Garden

The Portland Japanese Garden is one of my favorite places in the city. My mother was actually a founding member of the garden.

For many years I admired it, but it wasn't until the leadership of Steven Bloom that I truly fell in love with it. Under his direction, the garden evolved into one of the most respected Japanese gardens in the world. It rivals many gardens in Japan while maintaining its own distinctly international character.

I always find peace walking through the garden. If you become a member, one of the greatest benefits is early admission before the garden opens to the public, allowing you to enjoy it in relative solitude.

Day Trips

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach has always been one of my favorite Oregon destinations. Haystack Rock is iconic, the beach is beautiful year-round, and the town has a charming coastal atmosphere.

For many years I stayed at the Stephanie Inn, a lovely oceanfront inn known for its exceptional service and spectacular views. I haven't visited in several years, but I still have wonderful memories of my stays there.

Hood River

I also love Hood River. My brother once operated a video rental store there, so I visited often whenever I returned home.

The town sits along the Columbia River Gorge and is famous for its scenery, outdoor recreation, and excellent restaurants. During the summer you'll often see windsurfers and kiteboarders filling the river.

One of my favorite memories is dining at Stonehedge Gardens and enjoying their famous flaming bread pudding. The restaurant now operates primarily for private events, but Hood River has developed an impressive dining scene with many excellent alternatives.

For visitors, the Columbia Gorge Hotel is worth seeing. Perched above the river, it offers beautiful views of the Gorge and a wonderful sense of Oregon history.

These are only a few of the places I've loved over the years, but I hope they help you discover your own favorite corners of Portland. This city has a way of revealing itself slowly, and some of its greatest treasures are found through simple exploration.

Things to Love About Portland, Oregon

Downtown Portland and my neighborhood in Northeast Portland are very walkable, but renting a car is the best way to explore the surrounding areas. Portland is known for its vibrant coffee culture, with countless unique coffee shops throughout the city. Stumptown Coffee Roasters is one of the most well-known local names.

The city is also famous for its beautiful gardens. Near the Japanese Garden, you'll find the Portland Rose Garden, which offers stunning views of the city and thousands of roses in bloom during the summer months.

Nature is all around us, with endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, and simply enjoying the outdoors. From forested trails to scenic rivers and waterfalls, it’s easy to escape into nature without traveling far.

And best of all, Oregon has no sales tax, making shopping a little more enjoyable.

Because of Portland’s long-standing and active Japanese-American community, many residents have a strong appreciation for Japanese culture, cuisine, art, and traditions, making Japanese visitors feel especially welcome.

One of the places I hope to visit when I return to Portland next month is a special fountain located on the downtown waterfront. It was erected by the Sapporo Lions Club in memory of my father and a fellow Sapporo Lions member.

Although I have known about it for many years, I have never actually seen it in person. It feels especially meaningful to finally have the opportunity to visit and reflect on the friendship and community service that connected Portland and Sapporo through the Lions Club.
